The story behind MYHN

I DIDN'T LOOK AFTER MYSELF.

Over two decades in construction. A culture that said get on with it. And a breaking point that changed everything. #LetsGetTalkIn

Rob Muldoon

Founder, MYHN

I started my career in construction as an apprentice bricklayer over two decades ago. I worked my way up to become a project manager, running projects across the UK — ITV Studios, Manchester City's training ground, major MOD projects, student accommodation, schools and prisons. Alongside working on Tier One contracts, I ran my own brickwork company, growing it from just me to a team of 16.

FROM THE BUILDING SITE TO THE FRONT LINE OF MENTAL HEALTH

Life on the tools

Those years brought a steep learning curve. I began to recognise how working without looking after my own needs was affecting my mental wellbeing and the people I loved. But like most people in construction, I pushed it aside. Things like this don't happen to people like me — or so I thought.

The breaking point

In 2018, I experienced a mental breakdown. Until then, I had pushed my wellbeing aside, believing that things like this don't happen to people like me. It took hitting that wall to understand just how wrong I was — and how many others were quietly going through the same thing.

Starting the conversation

In 2020, I launched The MYH Podcast to give people in construction a space where they could feel safe sharing their experiences. One of my biggest struggles had been that I didn't talk, so starting a podcast felt like a good place to begin. I wanted others to know they weren't alone — and to hear stories that offered hope that things could get better.

Taking it further

That work has since grown into The MYH Network, taking those conversations beyond the podcast and into the industry. Today, I no longer lay bricks or manage construction projects. Over the past five years, I have spoken to more than 50,000 construction workers across the country, sharing my experience and practical ways to look after themselves and support those around them.
